VISHU (Kerala New Year’s Day) (This is a translation from Telugu.)
Divine Discourse BHAGAVAN SRI SATYA SAI BABA Held On 14-04-2000 In Sai Ramesh Hall Trayee, Brindavan
Bhagavan chants: Everyone is safe and can accomplish anything in the strength of unity. Have you not seen in the world small ants getting together, catching hold of a serpent and killing it? (Telugu poem)
Work With Unity Embodiments of Love! From ancient times, they achieved unity in the sacred land of India in numerous religions, in numerous castes, in numerous languages, in numerous forms. The differences of language, dress, customs or ideals have not come in the way of the unity of the people. When one individual is walking upon a footpath, he can’t walk happily even two miles. It seems to him that it is so much trouble and pain. However, when several people get together and walk on that same path, they won’t think about it or have any trouble at all. They will reach the goal with so much joy. So, the work that is done with unity, joy and courage will achieve victory. One small example, there are mathematics. When you multiply a+b with another a+b, it will equal a2 + b2 + 2ab. How did you get this extra 2ab? Between a2 and b2 there is a plus. When you have this plus, when they are multiplied, you get additional product 2ab. In that same way, there are 100 crores of people in India today. If everyone achieves unity by adding to himself plus one, plus one, plus one, how will this India be? However, the unity of India today is ruined. There is no unity between one village and the other. There is no connection between one language and another. There is no love between one individual and another. What is the reason? The main reason is this unity is ruined.
the Selfless Example of Prakriti If one inquires where God is, God is in the form of every individual in Prakriti (Nature). In Nature there are so many wonders. In Nature, the Earth is revolving around itself at the rate of 1,000 miles per minute. Due to its spinning in this way at 1,000 miles an hour, in the world there is night and day. Due to this night and day, man is doing numerous activities and experiencing happiness. Then, the earth is going around the sun with the speed of about 66,000 miles an hour. In this way, due to the speed of 66,000 miles, what is happening? Months and seasons come about and numerous types of crops ripen, giving food to all the people. Always wishing the welfare, the earth is giving bliss to the world. The earth does not take rest for even one second. This earth is always revolving, doing its duty and giving a very good example to man who, with endless troubles, with desires without limit, with meaningless anxieties, is struggling for something which he cannot attain. When every single man does his duty, there will be no danger at all for the world. Every single man has to follow the example of this earth. The ideal of Nature has to be followed in every way. Prakriti (Nature) does not mean only the earth. Every animal that is always going about with us is also equal to Nature. Therefore, in pure and sacred India, every single ant even gives an ideal example. Why should we not follow such an example?
Divinity and Humanness However, in man all types of evil desires are increasing. Due to these desires increasing, the unity in man has become lost. Wherever there is unity, there is Divinity. Wherever there is Divinity, there is purity. Therefore, due to there being no unity, purity has been destroyed. Due to there being no purity, Divinity has become distant. Therefore, what does Divinity mean? To discharge one’s duties is the most important aim of Divinity.Man has taken birth. He is living as man. We are saying that we are human beings, but we are forgetting humanness. It is a big danger for human beings to forget humanness. Today the unity of man is not to be seen at all. Even matter that is inert is discharging its duties. It should not be felt that just because man is inhaling and exhaling, he is living. It is a sign of human living when he does work. A machine that is inert is also doing work. However, only when it is doing its work, it will give us all different types of results. However, man who has Praana (life-breath) is forgetting his duty. Therefore, he is succumbing to so many troubles, losses and sorrows. Everyone must discharge well his own duties. We have to follow the ideal example of Nature. What is the reward for the earth for going around itself? It is not for itself. It is for the people on the earth. It must give the bliss. Without night and day, in what way will man be able to live? Therefore, due to the earth going around itself at the speed of 1000 miles an hour, day and night are arranged. In that way the earth goes not only around itself but also around the sun at the speed of 66,000 miles an hour. In this way also it is discharging its duties for the good of Nature. It is doing it for the good of the world. It is doing it for the peace of the world. Where is world peace today? It is not there at all. What is the reason? It is due to unity being destroyed.
Develop Unity Embodiments of Love!We have to develop unity. Due to no unity, we are subjected to all kinds of sorrow. If there are four in a house, those four have four different feelings. There is not even unity among four. Then, in what way can the world have unity? They say ‘We want all peace, we want all peace.’ They say ‘Peace, peace, peace.’ Holding the atom bomb, we go on shouting ‘Peace, peace!’ Though we reach the moon, we can’t reach peace and happiness (Telugu poem).Where will peace come from? In our hands are bombs, then how will we attain peace? Therefore, the bomb more valuable than anything else, the strongest bomb of all, the steadiest bomb of all is the Atma Tatwam (principle of Atma) of man. There is no better strength than this Love. Anything can be achieved with Love. It can change the earth into sky and the sky into earth. Therefore, the thing that we have to know today is that we should have unity. However, in man today the meaning of unity is not known at all. Unity is strength. It is happiness for all. Any activity at all can be accomplished. There is not one thing that we cannot attain with unity. If there is one finger, nothing can be done at all. When five fingers come together, so many things can be done. If this handkerchief has to be lifted, there has to be five fingers. We cannot do it with only one finger. Therefore, when people are together in unity, the power of man will increase. The nature of Love also will be manifested. Divine feelings will also manifest. Numerous powers also will arise in man. Man who has so much power, why is he not giving place for this unity? Every party, every individual, every village is scattered in disunity. It has become the fashion to say ‘No’ when someone says ‘Yes’. When someone says something, another does not accept it at all! Why should it not be accepted? Is it not accepted because one does not understand it? Or is it not accepted because one does not like it? One must attempt to understand and practise unity. Unity is wanted among all.
The Senses There are five Karma Indriyas (organs of action such as ears, nose etc.) and five Jnana Indriyas (sense organs of touch, hearing etc.). If these five Karma Indriyas and five Jnana Indriyas were separated, what is it that we could do? These five Karma Indriyas and five Jnana Indriyas should be merged into one. That is the true Divinity.See, these are five Karma Indriyas. (Swami shows one of His hands.) These are five Jnana Indriyas. (Swami shows His other hand.) When these ten come together, ‘Namaskaram.’ (Swami puts both His hands together in the traditional manner of greeting.) What is this Namaskaram? It symbolises, ‘My ego has gone.’ ‘Namo,’ ‘It is not mine.’ When the feeling comes that, ‘It is not mine,’ unity will come about. Due to feeling, ‘Mine, mine, mine, mine, mine,’ unity has been destroyed. Embodiments of Love! When love is developed, unity will easily come about. No matter how great a person he is, this love will be like a magnet drawing him. The whole body of man is like a magnet. Man’s body is like a big generator. Man’s heart is like a big radio. Man’s true Sankalpa (resolve) is like a sacred T.V. From this everything is shining. The power of man cannot be seen in anything else. The powers that are in this world, all these powers are only in man. Therefore, we are not able to understand such humanness. Due to the ego that ‘I will attain something’, we are leaving everything. Only when this ego and pomp and show is given up, unity will be experienced. Therefore, we have to make the correct effort for unity.
All Are One ‘This is the state of Kerala, this is the state of Karnataka, this is Tamil Nadu and this is Andhra.’ Thinking of all this is only developing differences. Due to it, we are experiencing so many problems. This is all the bad consequence of politics. They are dividing the whole state for the sake of selfishness, self-interests, and positions of authority. All are one. All hearts are unified. All feelings are those with love. However, these differences have arisen because of the vote. What is this vote and what is this note? These are only that which creates differences. First and foremost, the Divinity in man has to be purified.Embodiments of Love! From ancient days, India has given peace and security to the world, to all countries and in all times, due to its spiritual wealth. Therefore, from ancient times, they had the great Mantra of Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu. However, Rishis, Yogis, Munis, all of them did so many different types of Sadhanas and developed unity. Many sages struggled to achieve unity. With unity, they achieved even great things.Did not Harischandra, who was an ideal of Truth, rule this whole country? Did King Nala, who had no equal on this earth, take even a fistful of earth with him when he died? Did the great King Mandata take any money when he left this earth? Even the great Sri Rama, who built a bridge, is he on the earth today? Many kings ruled this country, but could they take all their wealth and lands with them? (Telugu poem) No one will take even a small fistful of earth with them. Everything should be offered to the earth. Therefore, that which came from the earth should be offered to the earth. Therefore, with unity we should make the earth our own. Therefore, the kings that came in the past gave such sacred ideals to us. Savitri, who brought her dead husband back to life, belongs to the sacred land of Bharat, isn’t it? Chandramati, who extinguished the flames of fire by Truth, was born in Bharat, isn’t it? Sita, who came out of the blazing fire unscathed was born in Bharat, isn’t it? Damayanti who burnt a wicked hunter to ashes with the power of her chastity, was born in Bharat, isn’t it? (Telugu poem)Great ones, women and men, were born in this India. Why should we not remember India’s ideal women and men? Why should we not follow their ideals? No one is following them. No women as women or men as men are wanting this. Great, pure mothers like this, sacred men like this have taken birth in India and set many different types of ideals. However, have we come only for celebrating New Years and Birthdays? The ideal words of the great ones have to be put into practise.
Practise Teachings Nowadays people are repeating, ‘Rama, Rama, Rama, Rama,’ remembering the Name of Rama. There is no result at all that comes from only saying the name of Rama. You have to practise at least a little of the ideals of Rama. Rama made a vow to follow the words of his father. Who is setting an example by following the words of their father? No, no! We are not putting even small, small matters into practise. Then, how can we be ideals?Embodiments of Love! Every word of the great ones should be put into practise. Hanuman was such a great devotee. He always repeated ‘Rama’ and immersed himself in it. What does man nowadays have that type of feeling of immersion? Hanuman was one who was peaceful, virtuous and strong. Does man have even one of these? Where is the authority for calling ourselves men or devotees? We have to keep at least a tiny part inside of us. From so many years, in so many ways you have entered onto the spiritual path. However, years are passing on, but progress in Sadhana is not progressing even a bit.
Message of Ravana This is the big message that Ravana gave to the world. He said, "Oh people, Embodiments of Love! I thought that only wealth was important. I thought gold was important. Truly, wealth and property will not come with us. I was proud that there was no greater one than me in the world. Finally, what happened? I didn’t experience satisfaction for even one day. Not able to control my desires, I destroyed my whole lineage. Not able to control my desires at all, I turned Lanka to ashes. Not able to make my wishes my own, I was the cause of all my brothers being killed. Therefore you, the people of Kali Yuga, should not succumb to these type of desires. I was proud that there were no people greater than me. However, finally what happened to my power? All were destroyed. When I was selfless, I attained bliss."These only were the intelligent things that Mandodhari told him. She wouldn’t speak against him. She wished for his welfare. She was contented with whatever she had. There is no wife equal to Mandodhari. (Telugu poem) She gave advise in so many ways to her husband. At last, she went and fell on Ravana who had fallen, dying on the ground.Mandodhari said, "Ravana! You considered woman as very ordinary. Did you put any of my teachings into practise? You earned the name of a great man. You studied all education. You did great austerity. Finally what was your fate? Is it your fate to bite the dust? You are a great emperor. This is not the fate that should happen to a great one. You have been killed by monkeys. This is a great sin. Why? Due to you desiring a great chaste woman, Sita, your fate has turned out like this. Who is the Sita that you desired? Rama’s Sita. If you had surrendered to Rama, you would have got Sita also. You put Rama far and desired Sita. Therefore, your fate changed to this. Therefore, Ravana, you should not only think of this now. In the coming birth also think of this. Don't do any harm to anyone. Don't give trouble to others. Don’t hurt anyone. With sacred feelings, love everyone. Then your life will be blessed." Due to that, both in the Valmiki Ramayana and Mahabharata of those days, that which was written is help ever, hurt never. To help others is merit and to harm others is sin. (Sanskrit sloka) Therefore, we should not give trouble or hurt anyone. We should not give pain to anyone’s mind. We should not put the body of anyone in danger. Love, Love, Love, Love. With Love, everyone will be added together: plus, plus, plus, plus. Everything will become one.
Strength in Unity See, what is this? A towel. (Swami held up His handkerchief.) How did this towel take this form? Due to numerous pieces of thread coming together, it became a towel. However, if we separate each thread, we can break it with two fingers. Due to all the threads coming together as one, it is very strong. Where did this strength come from? Due to unity. Due to all of these becoming one, so much strength came. Therefore, we have to bring all our senses together as one, with the feeling of offering them to God. The feeling of oneness must be followed. We have to attain the Divine path. We have to put differences far. Bliss has to be increased. This has to be distributed to all. Then the true humanness will increase for us. What does ‘mankind’ mean? Man is not ignorant. ‘Ma-na-va’ (meaning, ‘man’) has three letters. (Side A of the cassette ends. The next few sentences of the discourse were lost in the recording, as the cassette was being turned over.) (Side B begins) Due to selfishness and self-interests increasing, we have divided the complete form. Therefore, Embodiments of Love!No matter how many festivals we may celebrate, no matter how much grandness we experience, no matter how many scriptures we read, no matter how many discourses we hear, if we do not open the scriptures that are in our heart, all of these will be like pouring water into a vessel full of holes. Desire, anger, infatuation, envy and jealousy - these five enemies in us are like holes in us.
True Wealth However, today we are struggling for wealth. Mati (mind), Gati (fate), Sthithi (position), Sampati (wealth): these four are of utmost importance. What is our wealth? Divine Love is our wealth. There is no greater wealth than that for us. All the wealth that comes to you, will go. Money comes and goes, morality comes and grows. We have to take that which grows. After struggling with the merit and sin of so many births, this human birth has come. Why would you waste such a human birth that has come from so much merit? "I am not man at all. I am God." Have firm faith in that Truth. When you are God, keep Divine feelings within you. Do all actions. However, God is not one who hurts anyone, isn’t it? God is one who gives happiness to all. God is one who gives bliss to all. God is one who gives joy to all. Therefore, you also give happiness to everyone. Remove hatred, share love. You experience yourself.
Do your duty This humanness has been exemplified in so many scriptures such as the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita. One time Sri Krishna said, ‘What is the result that comes from Me doing all these actions? I don't need to do all these actions. I don't need to do any work. When I myself am everything, what need do I have to do work? But, if I do not do actions, the people will not do it. Therefore, to have people do actions, I am doing actions. Therefore, I am doing actions. I am doing it to help the people. I am doing actions for the welfare of the people. I am doing it for the prosperity of the people. Therefore, this is My duty.’Therefore, what is your duty? Because you were born in Prakriti (Nature), you have to follow Prakriti. Nature is helping everyone. Only when we follow Nature and help like this, we will become children of Nature. Therefore, Krishna also called Arjuna ‘Partha.’ What does ‘Partha’ mean? The ‘one born of mother earth’ is called ‘Partha’. Every single man born of mother earth is also ‘Partha’. Man, who is also ‘Partha’, should follow mother earth. This is the true duty. Duty itself will become Yoga. (Sanskrit sloka) This only is our Yoga. Just that. But if the eyes are closed and Yoga is done, that is not Yoga. That is all one type of Roga (disease)! To do one’s duties is Yoga.Embodiments of Love! Truly, you are all very lucky. This type of opportunity has been grasped in your hands. These types of sacred feelings you have heard. Take one or two into your heart. Do the correct effort to put them into practise. Therefore, every single festival gives a sacred message. But nowadays if one thinks of festivals, they think that the aim of festivals is making payasam (milk pudding) and Paramaannam (rice pudding), and eating them. It is not to eat foods. Festivals have come to set an ideal to others. This type of truth we have to realise and we have to understand well the secret of festivals. The aim of these festivals has to be put into practical practise. What are so many people listening to? With one ear they hear it and with the other ear they send it out.
Three Statues One time Bhoja Raju had a good sculptor bring three statues. Bhoja Raju knew the truth of all of this. But, to teach the people, he brought three statues. He called the minister and asked, "Minister! Out of these three statues, which of them is the best?" The minister brought a steel wire. He put it in one statue’s ear. That steel wire came out of the other ear. He said, "This is useless," and put it aside. Then he came near another statue. He put the wire in one ear. It came out of the mouth. He said, "This one is better than the other one, but it is still not the best." He put this wire in the third statue. The wire went inside. He said, "This is the best." That which goes inside, that which is heard, is the best. It went in one ear and came out the other, this one is worst. The other (next) one heard one word and then sent it out by saying it. However, it was not experienced. What is the use of having statues like this? In mankind also there are three types of statues or people. Hearing with one ear, we send it out the other ear. However, one better than that is hearing with the ears and teaching it to others. Better than these two, hearing with the ears and having it enter into the heart, that only is best. Therefore, Bhoja Raju said it in those days. Do actions to achieve purity of the heart. (Sanskrit sloka) The Chittam (mind) that sends into the heart that which is heard is the best Chittam. You all should have such minds. You should have such Buddhis (intelligence or thoughts) in you. You should become such ideal people.Embodiments of Love! Today it is seen as a New Year Day only for those in Kerala. This is not a New Year. One should teach spiritual, pure nature to everyone and this must be put into practise. In our India there have been so many great souls. Tyagaraja had sung this, ‘How many great ones there have been! To all of them, my salutations.’ (Telugu poem)So many great ones have been in the land of India. Such a land of India, which gives such a good example, this land of India with so much merit, this land of India with great sacrifice, but a land of India like this, they are trying to transform it into a land of Bhoga (enjoyment, pleasures). We don't want Bhoga. We want Yoga. We want sacrifice. This sacrifice should be changed into Yoga. Then our lives also will be blessed. Embodiments of Love! Develop Love . Develop Courage. Keep Peace. Follow all of these in action. That is the big message of today. Therefore, because you have come here, you should keep safely in your heart even one or two things said, put them into practise as far as possible, and sanctify your life.
(Bhagavan concluded His Divine Discourse with the Bhajan, "Om Sri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram…")
